Developers pitch casino plans at Waukegan public meeting; consultant touts ‘remarkable’ options

Elected officials in Waukegan and its neighboring communities began to line up behind their preferred casino proposals during a public hearing Wednesday evening at the Genesee Theatre. The meeting, which drew about 500 people over its four hours, was the next step in a process that will ultimately result in the Waukegan City Council recommending its top choices to send to the Illinois Gaming Board for approval, city officials said. The city has five options to choose from, none of which have any “fatal flaws,” said Charles Johnson, the principal of Johnson Consulting, a third-party consultant hired by the city to vet the would-be developers and their plans.
